HISTORICAL EXHIBIT OF ARTWORK AT THE GARIBALDI-MEUCCI MUSEUM
At the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, in Staten Island, from June 12th to June 30th, 2024, there was an interesting and visually exciting art exhibit of select works of Emilio Giuseppe Dossena [1903-1987]. It comprised paintings from the artist’s early years in the USA (therefore the title of the exhibit: Brooklyn, the Early Years). A successful artist with various shows in NYC, Dossena had an artistic epiphany while living in the Big Apple, which brought major stylistic transformations in his work. The paintings displayed at the Museum showed the progression from his Impressionist roots to the beginning of his Expressionist period (1968-1973). On Saturday, June 15, Tiziano Thomas Dossena, son of the artist and well-known author, officially opened the exhibit in a ceremony with various honorable guests offering an interactive presentation of his book on the artist: “The Dance of Color”. The book covers Dossena’s youth in Southern Lombardy, and his move to Milan, where he found his calling as an artist. The chapters trace his life movements from his studies at the Brera Academy to his marriage and the War years. His life story continues through the Fifties and Sixties, when his decoration and restoration activities bloomed. The chronicle proceeds into his American years in the late Sixties and the Seventies, and his last years back in Italy in the Eighties. There is also a thorough explanation of his artistic evolution and changes in style. The biography is complemented by five hundred images of paintings and family photographs, a complete listing of his achievements (exhibits and awards) and chapters on his poetry, his signatures and the family’s artistic heritage.
